THE VICE PRESIDENT LEADS THE DISCUSSIONS OF THE SGR TANZANIA - DRC PROJECT

The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania Mr. Dr. Philip Mpango has said that the implementation of the Modern Railway (SGR) project from Uvinza in the Kigoma region of Tanzania to Kindu in the Democratic Republic of Congo through Gitega in Burundi will increase the efficiency in the use of the Free Trade Zone in Africa by enhancing the transportation of people and goods.

The Vice President said this while leading discussions with investors about the modern railway project, discussions held at the African Investment Forum held in Abidjan in Ivory Coast. He said that all the three governments have set a sincere intention to implement the project, while Tanzania has already implemented modern railway connecting projects that shape the existence of this important project.

In addition, the Vice President has said that 50 percent of cargo coming from Tanzanian ports is sent to Burundi and Congo, so the need for the modern railway is important at the moment. He has said that the presence of a population estimated to reach 170 million in the countries of Tanzania, Congo and Burundi is a sure market for the various products that will be transported through the railway.

The Vice President also added that the project will save huge costs used in repairing the road infrastructure used in the transportation of goods from existing ports in Tanzania to the countries of Burundi and Congo.

Likewise, the Vice President has mentioned the project as one of the ways to preserve the environment due to using electrical energy as well as strengthening the agricultural sector and its products in a region endowed with fertile land and sufficient human resources.

For his part, the Minister of Infrastructure of Burundi, Honorable Dukundane Dieudonneè, said that the country has been losing more than 17 million US dollars every year in the transportation of goods, so the project will help in dealing with that situation. Dukundane added that the project will help in making good use of the mineral resources available in those countries such as gold, lithium, colbat and nickel by bringing them to world markets.
